Visit to Twin Stream Project

Yesterday, 26th of June, Room 12 went on a trip to visit the Twin Stream Project at Henderson creek. It was a long walk and it took us forever. On the way we saw people chucking away their rubbish, we even saw plastic rubbish laying in the stream, which will not rot for thousands of years. Meanwhile Room 12 was so tired from walking that long. After a while we saw some creeks and one big stream, that time it was so SCARY because we were at the side of the road and near the bridge. Room 12 was in a flash because the guys were waiting for us. After 25 mins. we were nearly there and we saw a treasure map and houses. A minute later Room 12 was so excited to meet the Twin Stream Project people Chris, Simon and Jack. Room 12 was happy and so grateful . The guys were talking about people littering and throwing rubbish away. The main reason we were there was help planting trees and to take care of the world and revegetate the stream bank to stop erosion.

Cool Characters

Character description

The One Legged Pirate

His beard the colour of fresh carrots, struck straight out like cactus spikes, one or two teeth missing, standing on one wooden leg. A very helpful parrot resting on top of him. A coat made from royal magenta and real gold thread on the sleeve. The age of 58 with very last year jeans, with a light blue hat with bones that mark the spot. His nose sharp like the sharpest cutlass in all of Neverland. His hands nearly as big as Wreck-It-Ralph's, an eye patch for a missing eye shot out by Black Beard or is it just for fashion.

New Show Me, maths strategy

Math,

that's what we have been doing in maths today. Please have a look.

Plan it Green

Dear Parents and Guardians,

we are learning about conserving and protecting the environment. Room 12 found an interesting conserving game teaching us about the 3 R's and looking after our planet. This game is created by the wonderful people from National Geographic Society. We believe by playing this fun game we will be learning lots of things about what it means to be a kaitiaki (a guardian of the environment).
Please check out the game and give it a go.

Studyladder updated!

Hello whanau,

it has been a while since we last posted something on Room 12's blog, our apologies for that. Mr. G was very busy travelling to Wellington with Pomaria's young leaders and visiting an ICT symposium, lot's of interesting new learning for him.
In the meantime the whole class was doing one assessment after the other and we will be still doing it this week to get it all done before the parent interviews are due.
Looking at the latest maths results I have updated the homework tasks on study ladder to support learners with ongoing practice of the basic facts and concepts around fractions and probability.

As an Art project for our enduring understanding of conservation we'll plan to create a sculpture made entirely from plastic bags. We will use lots and lots so please start putting them to the side for Room 12 and send them to school.

Home Learning Room 12

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words weekly that have been introduced in class. Each night of the week your child is expected to do a different activity to ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered. These activities have been modelled and practised in school, so your child can teach you how to do them.

Monday
Sort the words into categories like the ones we did in school. Your child should read each word aloud during this activity. Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way - what does the sort reveal about spelling in general? Ask your child to sort them a second time as fast as possible. You may want to time them.

Tuesday
Do a blind sort with your child. Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it. Lay it down and show where it goes in case they’re not sure.

Wednesday
Assist your child in doing a "word hunt", looking in a book they have already read for words that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find two or three for each category.

Thursday
Do a writing sort to prepare for the Friday test. As you call out the words in a random order your child should write them in categories. Call out any words your child misspells a second or even third time.

Math
To assure progress for your childs learning in the area of math it is very important to establish the knowlege of the times tables facts. This knowledge will help your child to problem solve more successful on a higher level especially in the area of division and multiplication. Focussing on one times table fact after school is sufficient, it is the repeated practice of the facts that will help to learn them. I have provided interesting and challenging activities online: go to www.studyladder.co.nz/myschool/17236/myclass/401564. Your child has her/ his own password to log in.
Thank you for your support. Together we can achieve more.
Sincerely,
Mr. Gorlich

Cross-Country Day 2014

Yesterday at Pomaria Primary School God's light struck Kaane as she ran her first lap. She was down in the swamp, when she kicked up mud while zooming past a girl. She took out the race in style, leading by a mile.
In the 10 year old race there was a little cheetah forgetting to mention to only have done 1 lap and taking the win. Fortunately this mistake was resolved.
My favourite part was when Joel shouted at Talula.
by Lyrik
One wet, rainy Cross-Country day. The 5 year old girls were starting the the race day. A lot of people were cheering for them. Turangawaewae was the loudest and the best of all PLG's. During the 9 year old girl's race I was scared because the boys were up next. Kaane's face looked very nervous before the race but once she had started she looked happy. Joel was screaming, shouting and cheering for Kaane and Talula but it looked like Talula wasn't even listening. While Kaane was running God struck his light on Kaane which made Kaane sprinting like the super hero Flash.

Chinese Paper Cutting Moustaches!

On Monday we had a Mandarin class. Our lovely Mandarin teacher taught us how to make a chinese lantern by folding the piece of paper and drawing the shape of the lantern on one half, not to forget to add some decorations. Then we had to cut out or lantern design.
But the most hilarious thing was when Talula & Faith came up with the marvellous idea to use the cut outs as moustaches. Wyatt the fearless marshall couldn't resist to join in. Check it out.

First Day back

First Day Back

Welcome to another term of learning in room 12. We're happy and excited to be back in the learning destination. We had an awesome day and looking forward listening to Mr. Gorlich reading Ender's Game to us.

We loved the part when Ms. Wilson said, she enjoyed seeing all our bright smiles again but even more the big grins on our parents faces.

Talofa, Hallo & welcome back to term 2

Talofa and Welcome back to Term 2 in room 12!

The holidays are over and it is time to go back to school. Another exciting and busy term lays ahead of us and part of this is room 12's up and coming blog - so watch the space. Part of our new learning this term will be regular posts of what happens in room 12 throughout the weeks. We're going to share our learning with the wider community and looking forward hearing back from our readers.

We have set our goals late in term 1 and now it's time to get to work to try our best to achieve these goals.  Term 2 is only 9 weeks long and lot's of things are already planned. Just to name a few:
  • Cross Country Competition (week 2)
  • Winter sport exchanges
  • Trip to twin stream project - Henderson Creek tbc
Our overarching concept for term 2 is conserving and what it means to be a kaitiaki. Our learning will be connected to matters of Preservation and Conservation of 'our world' and how we can play a role.
Linked to this concept are the Values of Responsibility and Consideration.

Looking forward seeing you all.

Mr. Gorlich

PS: watch this clip to learn what we have been doing in math to problem solve.
