Cool Characters

Character description

The One Legged Pirate

His beard the colour of fresh carrots, struck straight out like cactus spikes, one or two teeth missing, standing on one wooden leg. A very helpful parrot resting on top of him. A coat made from royal magenta and real gold thread on the sleeve. The age of 58 with very last year jeans, with a light blue hat with bones that mark the spot. His nose sharp like the sharpest cutlass in all of Neverland. His hands nearly as big as Wreck-It-Ralph's, an eye patch for a missing eye shot out by Black Beard or is it just for fashion.

New Show Me, maths strategy

Math,

that's what we have been doing in maths today. Please have a look.

Plan it Green

Dear Parents and Guardians,

we are learning about conserving and protecting the environment. Room 12 found an interesting conserving game teaching us about the 3 R's and looking after our planet. This game is created by the wonderful people from National Geographic Society. We believe by playing this fun game we will be learning lots of things about what it means to be a kaitiaki (a guardian of the environment).
Please check out the game and give it a go.

Studyladder updated!

Hello whanau,

it has been a while since we last posted something on Room 12's blog, our apologies for that. Mr. G was very busy travelling to Wellington with Pomaria's young leaders and visiting an ICT symposium, lot's of interesting new learning for him.
In the meantime the whole class was doing one assessment after the other and we will be still doing it this week to get it all done before the parent interviews are due.
Looking at the latest maths results I have updated the homework tasks on study ladder to support learners with ongoing practice of the basic facts and concepts around fractions and probability.

As an Art project for our enduring understanding of conservation we'll plan to create a sculpture made entirely from plastic bags. We will use lots and lots so please start putting them to the side for Room 12 and send them to school.

Home Learning Room 12

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words weekly that have been introduced in class. Each night of the week your child is expected to do a different activity to ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered. These activities have been modelled and practised in school, so your child can teach you how to do them.

Monday
Sort the words into categories like the ones we did in school. Your child should read each word aloud during this activity. Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way - what does the sort reveal about spelling in general? Ask your child to sort them a second time as fast as possible. You may want to time them.

Tuesday
Do a blind sort with your child. Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it. Lay it down and show where it goes in case they’re not sure.

Wednesday
Assist your child in doing a "word hunt", looking in a book they have already read for words that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find two or three for each category.

Thursday
Do a writing sort to prepare for the Friday test. As you call out the words in a random order your child should write them in categories. Call out any words your child misspells a second or even third time.

Math
To assure progress for your childs learning in the area of math it is very important to establish the knowlege of the times tables facts. This knowledge will help your child to problem solve more successful on a higher level especially in the area of division and multiplication. Focussing on one times table fact after school is sufficient, it is the repeated practice of the facts that will help to learn them. I have provided interesting and challenging activities online: go to www.studyladder.co.nz/myschool/17236/myclass/401564. Your child has her/ his own password to log in.
Thank you for your support. Together we can achieve more.
Sincerely,
Mr. Gorlich
